Akurana , அக்குரணை in Tamil) is in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. Akurana is hill country and a modern town in the Kandy district, 120 KM (70 Miles) from Colombo and 10 KM (6 Miles) from City of Kandy. Geographically, it is surrounded by hills and rivers. The Pinga Oya is the main river which cuts through the town. Majority of the population are ethnic Moors .According to Sri Lankan history, this city was presented to the Muslim community by a Sinhalese King for bravery and support of Muslim men in war. Also Kandy Perahara was started to welcome the 4 Muslim personalities(name not included) who came from Saudi Arabia and helped the King of Kandy and after wards it became as a Kandyan culture.
